This is a large, open map that is good for 5v5 and up.  It survived being voted off of the world's most popular custom map regular weapons CTF server for almost a year and has been played in 5v5 clan-match style PUG matches and often resulted in good games, some of which went into overtime.  It's also good for low-gravity sniper and instagib.  Don't let the name fool you; it's about the same size as CTF-Orbital.

This is a clan ladder-grade map and probably my best map.  It's a fast-paced medium-sized map that is perfect for 5v5.  It features five sequential rooms with a cylinder in the middle.  It's not too tight and not too open making for fast-fragging fun.  Custom textures and custom music have been incorporated into the map.

This map is all about high-body count, action-packed, fragging fun. I was always amazed by how many people loved the map CTF-CarPark and it inspired me to create my own version which is sort of like a CTF-CarPark2 but much better. It features an easy-to-understand network of spammy colorful sewer-like tubes with an open central area. It even makes use of jump boots. If you enjoy the carnage and insanity that you'll find on maps like CTF-Burning and CTF-CarPark, then this map is for you.

This is a dark, bold, colorful map that has been played in 5v5 clan-style PUG matches. It is long and somewhat thin, consisting of 7 sequential rooms connected by wide straight and toroidal pipes offering a high route, a low route, and a ground floor route with all of the routes converging in an open center. The flags are set on conical hills which makes flag room defense challenging.

Where can you find populated regular weapons custom map UT99 CTF servers (as opposed to Sniper, Instagib, and Strangelove)?

Xoldog 400 Fun Server

This is a European server and the best times to play are from around 2 pm to 6 pm U.S. EST. It regularly fills to between 10-14 people and it runs custom maps. Each week players can vote to have two maps removed from the server and vote to have two new ones added. This server also has a custom mod that chooses the next map based on the number of people on the server, so if only 8 people are on the server it won't choose a huge map.

Terror Squad |Ts| Server

This is an American server that is populated sporadically during North American prime time.  The |Ts| community also has a separate CTF-Face only server.

Communidad Latina Server

This server is located in Atlanta but is supported by a community of laid-back Latin American and South American fraggers, so you'll encounter a lot of Spanish. However, they seem to be doing a good job of populating it during North American prime time.  This community also hosts the #Latinopug server.

Judge's CTF Server

This is a North American server that caters to a group of friends from various defunct CTF communities, mostly the FOCR clan and Unreal Playground.  It is sometimes populated on Friday and Saturday nights, carrying on the tradition of Frag Friday.  It has Mapvote though I don't think he has a dedicated server.

A Guide to Playing UT99 PUG matches

Divider bar

What is a PUG match?  A PUG match is a (P)ick (U)p clan-match style (G)ame which experienced players regard as being of higher quality or at least more interesting and meaningful than games on a public server.  On a public server players come and go and the teams may be unbalanced.  In contrast, in a formal clan match players have assigned positions (defense, offense, middle, etc.) and use voice comm, which makes it a real team game.  But what if you want to play a game of UT99 CTF that feels like a clan match but you're not in a clan, clan activity no longer exists, you just want to play for fun, and/or you want to play spontaneously without having to show up at a scheduled time?

Introducing PUG matches!  PUGs are organized on the IRC (Internet Relay Chat) which are the original chat rooms on the Internet.  Basically, people sign up to play a 5v5 by typing .join.  You can leave by typing .leave.  A program called a pugbot keeps track of who has signed up and when it reaches ten players, two become team captains (or are chosen at random) and draft-pick the other eight players in an A-BB-AA-BB-A draft order so that the first captain has the first and last picks.  Players then join a Teamspeak voice comm channel (which is required) and go to a designated server.  In order to maintain decorum, there are rules to pugging (such as to show up if you joined and the teams were picked) and discipline is maintained with temporary player bans.  What does it look like?  Here are two sequential screenshots:  Pug gets filledTeams get picked

What is IRC?  IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, which are the original chat rooms on the Internet.  IRC is "old school" now, but that's what gamers used to communicate before XFire, MSN, and AOL Instant Messenger.  In my opinion IRC is superior.  In fact, both UT99 and UT 2004 have built-in IRC browsers.  (Ever wonder what that "Chat" tab was in the server browser?)  You can also access the IRC with an external program, which is better but more complicated than using the UT IRC clients.  If you use Firefox you can get the Chatzilla plug in.  Two other good programs are mIRC and Visual IRC.  You can also attempt to access it through an easy-to-use GameRadius.net Java Applet, which isn't currently working.  The Java applet will take you to #latino pug.  Type /join #(channel name) to join another channel or /name (new name) to change your name.

Where are the PUG channels?  The ones I know of are at the server irc.GameRadius.net and for regular weapons CTF.  There are also PUG channels for Sniper, Instagib, and Deathmatch.

#Speedpug  This used to be a very popular and active channel for 125 speed regular weapons CTF that was welcoming of new players but it is no longer very active.

#Latinopug  This is an active channel that caters to Latin and South American fraggers but also servers many American and Canadian players who used to play at #speedpug.  It is probably your best bet if you are new to pugging.

#MLUT  This is the IRC home and pug channel for the Major League Unreal Tournament community, which is the pro community.  It is no longer very active.  You may encounter some hostility towards new players and some overblown egos here and at #Kings.

#Kings  This is where the pro community is pugging right now and you probably won't be very welcome if you are new.

Sins PUGs

How does Sins pugging work?  I actually introduced pugging to the Sins community in mid-2008 and it really took off.  I had hoped to get people to learn to use IRC and to use voice comm but to no avail.  If you play Sins on Ironclad Online and you join a 4v4 or 5v5 Entrenchment game, chances are that the players might "pug it".  Everyone goes to Team 10 and after two people become team captains and choose other team numbers.  A non-captain then picks a number from 1-10 and /w whispers it to another non-captain.  The two captains then pick numbers from 1-10, usually 5 and 6.  Whoever is closest to the number gets to decide whether to be the first captain or to defer and become the second captain.  For a 5v5 the draft order is A-BB-AA-BB-A with the first captain having the first and last pick.  For a 4v4 the usual pick order is A-BB-A-B-A though A-BB-AA-B is also possible.
